There are a number of different fitness classes that you can attend. Variety is the key to motivation. We encourage everyone to take advantage of all our classes. Attending different styles each week is a great way to cross train and it will keep your exercise regime new and exciting. Classes often change from session to session so please refer to the current fitness class schedule for times and locations.

ORIENTATIONS
- Start it Up Right
Our exclusive Start it Up Right orientations to the Wellness Centre will get all members on the road to wellness.
Topics covered are:
- Proper use of cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, etc...)
- Proper use of strength training equipment (Trotter and Hammer Strength)
- Proper warm up and cool down
- General Fitness/Training tips
- Intensity of workout (both cardiovascular and strength training)
Orientations include a brief consultation as to the member's current activity level, realistic goals, fitness needs, and a physical activity readiness questionnaire. Cardio and weight orientations can be booked at the Welcome desk or with one of our fitness staff/volunteers.
FITNESS APPRAISALS / ASSESSMENTS
This service is also available to our members and non-members.
The Fitness Appraisal includes the following:
- Health History
- Lifestyle Questionnaire
- Program Goals
- Body Composition
- Blood Pressure
- Aerobic Test
- Flexibility Test
- Muscular Strength & Endurance
- Assessment of Abilities
- Exercise Guidelines for Change
Preliminary Instructions for Clients:
- Comfortable loose clothing should be worn (t-shirt and shorts recommended)
- Running shoes are the recommended footwear.
- No food consumption four hours prior to the appraisal.
- No heavy exercise four to six hours prior to the appraisal.
- Should also refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages six hours and caffeine for two hours prior to appraisal.
- Clients should not smoke during the two hours prior to the appraisal.
- In the case of body composition testing - do not use over the counter diuretics and empty bladder prior to each test.
SPECIALTY CLASSES
The YMCA-YWCA offers specialty classes throughout the year to educate members in various areas of health, fitness and recreation.
Registration for these classes is required at the beginning of the session. There may be a member/non-member fee associated with some of the programs. Please register at the Welcome Desk.
Cardiac Maintenance
The Cardiac Maintenance program is designed to insure cardiac rehabilitation patients, as well as those who fall
under a high risk category, have a structured, supervised exercise program.
Kickboxing
This class will teach proper kickboxing punch and kick techniques utilizing focus pads, heavy bags and partner training.
Using interval training and drills you will be sure to challenge your body.
Creating Balance
This is a group based weight management information program that is designed to educate people about healthy eating choices. Each week the focus is on a different workout routine and is designed to help individuals make smart choices for a healthy lifestyle.
Teen Weight Training
This is a 6-week introductory weight training and weight room etiquette program to enable teens to use the weight room safely at any time. Topics include cardiovascular training, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility and nutrition.
Advanced Teen Weight Training
This is a 5-week weight training program involving free weights and machines. There will be more in-depth knowledge and practice for muscle strength and endurance routines. Must have attended Teen Weight Training or be over the age of 16.
Mom and Baby Boot Camp
This class is designed for the post-partum mother. It's a great outdoor workout that incorporates your baby at the same time.

Group Training
Do you have a team or group looking for a challenging workout? Does your team need to be conditioned for the season? FITNESS LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Want to become a Group Fitness Instructor or an Individual Conditioning Leader? Join our National Program.
Basic Fitness Theory: Provides participants with the foundations, theory related to anatomy, movement mechanics and fitness principles. Basic Fitness Theory is a prerequisite to Individual Conditioning Level II and III, Group Fitness Leader and Aquatic Leader Applied Theory courses.
Individual Conditioning:
Level 1: Building relationships with members in order to create a positive atmosphere in the conditioning centre where members can strive toward and achieve their goals.
Level 2: To supervise and lead individuals in Conditioning Centre based activities that help them reach their health and fitness goals in spirit, mind and body.
Level 3: Provide comprehensive one-on-one advanced training fitness programs for members to help them reach their health and fitness goals in spirit, mind and body.
Fundamentals of Group Fitness and Streams:
Learn to facilitate land or water based fitness activities that help people reach their health and fitness goals in Spirit, Mind and Body. Streams available include Group Choreography, Group Resistance Training, Group Cycling, Core Strength and Aquatic Fitness.
