ADULT FITNESS PROGRAMS
There are a number of different fitness classes that you can attend. Variety is the key to motivation. We encourage everyone to take advantage of all our classes. Attending different styles each week is a great way to cross train and it will keep your exercise regime new and exciting. Classes often change from session to session so please refer to the current fitness class schedule for times and locations.

ORIENTATIONS -
Start it Up Right


Our exclusive Start it Up Right orientations to the Wellness Centre may take up to 1 1/2 hours, and may involve more than one session, depending upon the member's goals and needs.

Topics covered are:

  • Proper use of cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, etc...)
  • Proper use of strength training equipment (Trotter and Hammer Strength)
  • Proper warm up and cool down
  • General Fitness/Training tips
  • Intensity of workout (both cardiovascular and strength training)

Orientations include a brief consultation as to the member's current activity level, realistic goals, fitness needs, and a physical activity readiness questionnaire.

  • Proper use of Keiser equipment - just 30 minutes gives you a full body workout
  • Proper TechnoGym use
  • Proper warm up and cool-down

STRENGTH TRAINING AND CONDITIONING
A well balanced fitness program includes strength training. The Saint John YM-YWCA offers many programs that will help you develop muscular strength and endurance.

Teen Weight Training is a five week course that is mandatory for anyone under 16 who would like to use the Shape Up Studio. This class is an excellent introduction to all the basics of strength and conditioning. Participants must register for this program. Please check with the Welcome Desk for times and dates.

Women on Weights (WOW) This two session class focuses specifically on strength training exercises and tips for women. You will learn what happens to the body with age, how exercise helps and great new exercises to help tone and sculpt your body.


FITNESS APPRAISALS / ASSESSMENTS
This service is also available to our members and non-members.

The Fitness Appraisal includes the following:

  • Health History
  • Lifestyle Questionnaire
  • Program Goals
  • Body Composition
  • Blood Pressure
  • Aerobic Test
  • Flexibility Test
  • Muscular Strength & Endurance
  • Assessment of Abilities
  • Exercise Guidelines for Change

The Appraisal is usually done in two sessions. The first to consult with the client and gather data and the second to interpret the results of the appraisal and consult further with the client.

Preliminary Instructions for Clients:

  • Comfortable loose clothing should be worn (t-shirt and shorts recommended)
  • Running shoes are the recommended footwear.
  • No food consumption four hours prior to the appraisal.
  • No heavy exercise four to six hours prior to the appraisal.
  • Should also refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages six hours and caffeine for two hours prior to appraisal.
  • Clients should not smoke during the two hours prior to the appraisal.
  • In the case of body composition testing - do not use over the counter diuretics and empty bladder prior to each test.


SPECIALTY CLASSES
The YMCA-YWCA offers specialty classes throughout the year to educate members in various areas of health, fitness and recreation.

 

Registration for these classes is required at the beginning of the session. There may be a member/non-member fee associated with some of the programs. Please register at the Welcome Desk.

Cardiac Maintenance

The Cardiac Maintenance program is designed to insure cardiac rehabilitation patients, as well as those who fall

under a high risk category, have a structured, supervised exercise program.

 

Women On Weights (WOW)

This two session class focuses
specifically on strength training exercises and tips for women. You will learn what happens to the body with age, how exercise helps and great new exercises to help tone and sculpt your body.

Fit Box

This program introduces participants to the sport of boxing and the benefits of cardio and strength.  Learn to work on balance, footwork, kipping, punching and other boxing techniques in a safe, non-contact environment. 

Stronger Bones

This program is led by a trained instructor two times per week. Specifically made for participants with osteoporosis, the class includes low impact aerobics, strenght training and an educational component. The class takes place both in the pool and the wellness centre.

Boot Camp

Get extreme at the Y. This is an interval style program that is sure to get your heart pumping! Alternate between cardio, strength, plyometrics, balance, agility, and coordination drills to put the challenge back into your workout!

Co-ed Volleyball League

Fun for all! Get your friends together and join the fun activity of volleyball. We have both Recreation and Competitive divisions for co-ed teams. Leagues are each session (approx 12 weeks) with playoffs.

WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Lunch & Learns

Join the HFR staff once a month for information on health and wellness. We will feature a new exercise each month to help you keep variety in your workouts.

Personal Training

Not sure where to start or how to progress in your current program. We have a variety of training packages to suit everyone’s needs. Let our certified trainers help you on the road to wellness!

 

 

FITNESS LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

 

Want to become a Group Fitness Instructor or an Individual Conditioning Leader?  Join our National Program.

Basic Fitness Theory:   Provides participants with the foundations, theory related to anatomy, movement mechanics and fitness principles. Basic Fitness Theory is a prerequisite to Individual Conditioning Level II and III, Group Fitness Leader and Aquatic Leader Applied theory courses. 

             

Individual Conditioning: 

              Level 1: Building relationships with members in order to create a positive atmosphere in the conditioning centre where member can strive toward and achieve their goals.

           Level 2: To supervise and lead individuals in Conditioning Centre based activities that help them reach their health and fitness goals in spirit, mind and body.

               

              Level 3:  Provide comprehensive one-on-one advanced training fitness programs for members to help them reach their health and fitness goals in spirit, mind and body.

  

Group Fitness and Aquatic Fitness Leader:

Learn to facilitate land or water based fitness activities that help people reach their health and fitness goals in spirit, mind and body.

Once the necessary requirements have been met, you may gain the nationally recognized YMCA Certificate

The only restriction on enrollment in the course is that the participant must be over the age of 16. Members and non-members from all backgrounds are eligible.
